PERSONAL, SOCIAL, HEALTH AND ECONOMIC EDUCATION (PSHE)

Our PSHE curriculum helps children to build their confidence, resilience and self-esteem and to identify and manage risk. They develop the skills to make informed choices and understand what influences their decisions. It enables children to respect themselves, others and to celebrate diversity whilst managing their emotions and communicating effectively. Developing an understanding of themselves, empathy and the ability to collaborate with others helps children to form and maintain good relationships and better enjoy and manage their lives.

We teach PSHE through three core themes:

Health and Well Being

Topic areas:

  • healthy lifestyles
  • keeping safe
  • growing and changing

Relationships

Topic areas:

  • healthy relationships
  • feelings and emotions
  • valuing difference

Living in the Wider World

Topic areas:

  • rights and responsibilities
  • taking care of the environment
  • money matters

We incorporate PSHE into all curriculum areas and throughout the school day. We also explore themes during many of our assemblies and develop those themes during circle time, playtimes and lunchtimes. Most of our topics are covered by the ‘myHappymind’ programme implemented in both the EYFS and KS1. Many of the topic areas included in the core themes are supported by the ‘Cobbs’ Rules’ and the children are encouraged to follow the 'Cobbs’ Rules' for behaviour and learning.

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development (SMSC)

Spiritual, moral, social and cultural education is promoted through all subjects and permeates everything we do in school. It is part of our ethos and everyone working in school recognises that it is of paramount importance in developing children’s sense of self, their happiness and their growing understanding of others and the world in which they live. Through SMSC and PHSE we promote the British values of individual liberty, democracy, rule of law and mutual respect and tolerance. Look through our photographs to see examples of how we promote British Values in school through voting and celebrating special days and events.

Our Rules:

  • Ready - represents so many of the behaviours which are important to teach our young children. It prevents any valuable learning time being wasted and enables our school to function effectively.
  • Kind - is a word that all of our children know. We tell our children that it is important to be kind, but what does that mean? At The Cobbs, our children will be taught many ways to be kind to themselves and others.
  • Safe - the safety and wellbeing of the children is our highest priority. Parents and families send their children to our school each day, trusting us to provide a secure environment in which they will flourish. We do everything we can to ensure that this expectation is a reality in our school and that includes teaching the children how to keep themselves and others safe.
