COMPUTING
The Cobbs Infant and Nursery school understands that IT and Computing are an integral part of the national curriculum and that IT skills are important beyond the classroom. We recognise that technology underpins today’s modern lifestyle and our vision is to develop independent learners who are well equipped for their future, aiming for all children to gain the appropriate knowledge and skills. We are keen to prepare children to participate in a rapidly developing world and ensure they begin to use technology thoughtfully and safely and see it as an essential tool for learning.
The focus of our Computing curriculum is to use a range of programs and to learn about programming computers. Work within each year group ensures continuity and progression and is closely linked to other areas of the curriculum. All classes have timetabled sessions in the IT Suite to give pupils the opportunity to enhance, practise and apply their skills. They also use a range of IT equipment and software including iPads, PCs and programmable robots, from Nursery to Year 2, to enhance their skills and improve their confidence using IT in the world around them.
Children are taught how to use a computer as well as learning about algorithms (i.e. sets of instructions). To illustrate this we do not always involve computers, teachers may use the idea of following recipes, following instructions and directions within school.
Our WOW Experiences
What Computing looks like in our school
We have a wide range of Apps and software to further develop the children’s skills as they progress through the school. Children also look at ways in which computer programs can be used to create, organise, store, retrieve and edit digital content. They are given the opportunity to create and debug simple programs of their own, developing logical reasoning skills and taking their first steps in using devices like Beebots and BlueBots.
We are very lucky to have a class set of iPads to further enrich our Computing curriculum, which are very popular with the children in all year groups. They enhance the learning in all areas and we have a wide range of cross-curricular apps and activities.
Upon starting school, children are taught the importance of Internet Safety which is an integral part of the Computing curriculum. The children follow our Internet Safety Rules and know how to stay safe online. Children are also issued with their own username and password details.
We regularly host a Computing experience for Key Stage 1 children from some of the schools within our local area. The children who attend the experience are those who love learning in this subject. Skills we have learnt during these workshops have focused on animation and movie making. We have used Stop Motion animations where the children have enjoyed filming short clips using their own characters. We have also used iMovie to make trailers, working together to include text, film and animation. The sessions are great fun and the children always work so hard and have produced some excellent results!! See our WOW Experiences above.
