Year 1 - Scientific Investigations
Year 1 enjoyed investigating with different materials. They sorted a range of objects into different groups for things made of wood, metal and plastic. Then they sorted objects according to their properties so they looked at rough and smooth, hard and soft, opaque and transparent, shiny and dull, flexible and rigid.
One of their investigations had a starting question of ‘Which material is best for making an umbrella?’ They predicted which materials would be waterproof and which were not waterproof and then carried out a fair test to see if they were correct.
Linked to the topic of Fairy Tales, they decided to find out which material would be best to make a bed mattress for the Princess in ‘The Princess and the Pea.’ They even used a real pea to test if they could feel it! They also made predictions on which materials would float and sink so that the 'Three Billy Goats Gruff' could make a raft to sail across the river.
