MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES (MFL)

French continues to be taught incidentally and practised on a regular basis throughout the school. Children are encouraged to answer the register in French using 'Bonjour' and enjoy easy-to-learn rhymes and games. The focus is on speaking and listening skills with constant repetition.

As a whole school, we celebrate the 'European Day of Languages' each year.  Everyone enjoys a 'French breakfast' and sample croissants, pain au chocolat and lait au chocolat (chocolate milk).  We greet each other in French, play simple games in French and sing French songs.  The children also learn to recognise the French flag (le tricolore) and learn the corresponding colours in French: red (rouge); blue (bleu) and white (blanc).  Children sometimes paint flags and make paper chains using the three colours.

We have a weekly French club which is open for Year Two children to join, as part of the selection of extra-curricular clubs offered in school.  At French club, children practice speaking in French and learn how to introduce themselves. Children attending French club also enjoy playing games and learning rhymes to help them learn French vocabulary from a variety of different topics.
